Sport, Health and Wellbeing 

Following pupil conferencing, we found that, when children saw ‘PSHE’ written on the whiteboard as part of their day’s timetable, they were not able to clearly articulate what that meant. Nor did they clearly see the relationship between PE and PSHE. As a result, we rebranded our PE (physical education) and PSHE (personal, social, health and economic education), by merging them together as ‘Sport, Health and Wellbeing’.

We want our children to have a life-long interest in physical activity. We want them to recognise that managing their own wellbeing includes being aware of what one eats, and how exercise can help you mentally and physically. This is good not only for them individually, but for our community and society as a whole. After all, a physically active, mentally strong society will place less strain on our NHS.

Whilst the two curriculums continue as they are, we now make sure that straight after (or before) the weekly teacher taught ‘PE’ lesson, teachers always timetable in the weeks PSHE lesson. When putting this up on the board teachers will write it as ‘Sport, Health and Wellbeing’. The language and the flow from one session to the next, will be communicated to the children by the staff at all times so that children make those connections.
