At Longparish C.E Primary School, our maths curriculum is ambitious for all learners. We want children to be excited and enjoy practical maths lessons which encourage exploration, so that children can see the bigger picture, deeper understand the mathematics and make powerful mental connections between concepts. Our intent is to follow an ambitious, connected mathematics curriculum which is structured, coherent and accessible to all pupils from EYFS to Year 6 and develops them as mathematical thinkers.
Our aim is that our children gain sound procedural and conceptual understanding whilst building on their previous knowledge. We want them to develop fluency and the quick and efficient recall of facts and procedures and to have the flexibility to move between different contexts and representations of mathematics. The emphasis at each stage is teaching a deep and sustainable understanding of maths through using a CPA (concrete, pictorial, abstract) approach (Jerome Bruner).
For this reason we have fluency, problem solving and reasoning built into each lesson, ensuring conceptual mathematical understanding and enabling our children to confidently discuss and reason with their maths, find connections between mathematical concepts and be happy to mistakes and use them as a tool for learning.
